    5 Tips to Stay Healthy On Vacation

    There’s no better way to unwind and relax than by taking vacation. Whether you prefer the beach, mountains or elsewhere, vacationing is a sure-fire way to lower your stress levels. But it’s difficult to enjoy your vacation when you are sick. Even if it’s just the common cold, an illness will force you stay cooped up inside the hotel room in hopes of getting better. If you have a vacation planned in the near future, consider the following tips to stay healthy and protect against illness.

    #1) Drink Water When Flying

    If you’re traveling to your vacation destination via airplane, drink lots of water during your flight. The World Health Organization (WHO) explains that most airplanes have dry cabins with a relative humidity of just 20%. This low humidity will dry out your nasal passages, increasing the risk of infection. Drinking water, however, keeps your nasal passages moist, preventing the intrusion of illness-causing microbes.

    #2) Eat Healthy

    I know this probably sound like common sense, but it’s worth mentioning that you should eat healthy when vacationing. Far too many people eat out when vacationing simply because they don’t want to cook. In doing so, their diets shift to unhealthy foods that are often filled with high concentrations of sodium, saturated fat and sugar. You can still eat on when vacationing, but choose healthy meals to maintain a strong immune system.

    #3) Exercise

    Of course, you should also exercise when vacationing. If you’re staying in a hotel or condo, check to see if there’s a communal gym available. Many vacation properties have free-to-use gyms, and spending just 30 minutes here per day can boost your immune system and help protect against illness.

    #4) Wash Your Hands

    You’ll probably come into contact with a variety of germ-ridden surfaces when vacationing. From doorknobs and elevator buttons to airplane seats and lavatory faucets, surfaces such as these will expose you to germs. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), washing your hands is one of the most important and effective ways to reduce your risk of illness. So, be sure to wash your hands with warm water and soap on a regular basis when vacationing.

    #5) Relax

    Vacationing is supposed to reduce stress, but this isn’t always the case. Some people may experience increased stress levels when vacationing. And in doing so, their immune system takes a hit, making them susceptible to illness. To prevent this from happening to you, try to relax and unwind on your vacation.
